About

Our Roots

Aaron's Society understands the tremendous need for support, understanding, relationship, and community, for those trying to make sense of adverse, random and traumatic life events.

Aaron's Society was a vision founded by Michele Smith who experienced the traumatic death of her son, Aaron, in 2010. There came a point in her journey that she realized that there were few places that addressed trauma, fewer that understood the experience, and fewer still who knew how to treat it. Already having worked with survivors of death of a loved one for 24 years and had some graduate studies in Pastoral Care and Counselling with additional studies in grief, she embarked on the study of trauma. She completed her Level One Trauma Practitioner Certification, Advanced Trauma Practitioner Certification, Certified Trauma and Resilience Trainer, and then attended the Justice Institute of B.C. for a year to pursue her Graduate Certification at the Master's level in Complex Trauma.

Peer groups were not a stranger to her and along the way she discovered others who shared her same heart and desires. Some more than willing to take the courses Michele required of volunteers who wished to help with facilitating peer groups. In these gracious, enthusiastic, committed and caring people, Aaron's Society's founding Board members and volunteers were born.
